Liceo Scientifico “Lorenzo Mascheroni”

The Liceo Scientifico “Lorenzo Mascheroni” was born in 1985  thanks to  the initiative of a group of teachers led by Mr Letterio Di Mauro determined to create an active, modern and lively state school.
The school is dedicated to Lorenzo Mascheroni (Bergamo, 1750 – Paris, 1800), great mathematician, poet and enlightened reformer who lived in Bergamo in the second half of the XVIII century.
Since 1987 the lyceum has strengthened the mathematical-scientific subjects without giving up the humanistic ones.
           

Now we have the two types of school curricula suggested by the latest reform: Liceo Scientifico and Liceo delle Scienze Applicate.
All the new experiences of innovation are possible thanks to the building and the area of the school offering large room and technological features, a series of laboratories with high potential of development.

Students and territory

The students are about 1300; 43% live in town, the area of which is mostly industrialised and very dynamic; the advanced service industry is supportive of both industry and commerce.
Culture is enhanced by solid and well known features like theatres, museums and galleries; theatre, music or science festivals are opportunities to collaborate with these institutions which have always offered a contribution to the general education of our students.
The demand has always been towards a plural approach of the formation of the person, the quality of education, the efficient organisation of the school.
At the end of this course, 98% of the students go to university, mostly in the scientific field, or, secondly, in the economic and law one.
The laboratory activity has always taken an important role in the educational purposes so that the students are used to an experimental approach together with the theoretical one, with the aim of reaching the skills of rigorous observation, control of the operations, careful evaluation and critical analysis.
As regards the social aspect of the educational objectives, our school promotes different activities to create a collaborative environment, together with moments of education to health, workshops about different ways of expression or languages.

Purposes

The main purposes of our school are:

• providing significant mathematical-scientific skills always inside a historical, linguistic, artistic background of our civilisation;
• providing , in every subject, basic knowledge and useful tools to read and critically understand complexity;
• developing the awareness of the unity of knowledge even through multidisciplinary topics;
• showing the instrumental and educational value of the new technologies through their constant use;
• forming citizens responsible for their actions and commitments, able to evaluate reality and to operate for the common progress of the society;
• promoting activities aiming at the respect of the human rights and at the culture of peace and non-violence.
