And so, every time the Man has met Another man, he had to face three different options: he could choose the war, he could hide behind a wall, he could start a dialogue......
My long experience among Others has taught me that the only way to reach the very core of humanity is to be open and  kind towards the other human beings.

E dunque, ogni volta che l’uomo ha incontrato l’Altro, si è trovato di fronte a tre possibilità: poteva scegliere la guerra, poteva circondarsi con un muro, poteva instaurare un dialogo. [. . . ] La mia pluriennale esperienza vissuta tra Altri lontani, mi insegna che solo la benevolenza nei confronti dell’altro essere umano costituisce il giusto approccio per far vibrare dentro di lui la corda dell’umanità.

First of all we need to respect the other, and this is not always easy. On the contrary, it is often very difficult to always and anyway respect other people’s traditions, values and beliefs. To do that we should control our pride, we should stop thinking we are the best in the world. A mistake, the one of  considering oneself higher, which  we risk to make even too often, getting a real superiority complex to come out.

If we decide to want to know the other, a second  necessary condition is humility.

The third necessary condition is the effort to understand the other: it is the challenge of going beyond our mind’s limits to stretch out a hand to the other.

Innanzitutto occorre il rispetto per l’altro, e questo non è sempre facile. Anzi, è spesso molto difficile rispettare sempre e comunque le tradizioni, i valori e le convinzioni altrui. Per farlo dobbiamo mettere a freno il nostro orgoglio, dobbiamo smettere di pensare che siamo i migliori al mondo. Un errore, quello di ritenersi superiori, che si rischia di commettere fin troppo spesso, facendo così emergere un vero e proprio complesso di superiorità.

Se si decide di voler conoscere l’altro, una seconda condizione necessaria è l’umiltà.

Terza condizione è lo sforzo di comprendere l’altro: è la sfida di andare al di là dei nostri limiti mentali per tendere una mano all’altro.

The Man’s life is never conceivable without the Other: so tragedy is not the conflict, otherness, the difference, but the two extremes which deny this relation: confusion and separation. In this new season we have to learn how to accept the mystery and the enigma of the one we do not know, of the one who looks like the stranger not only the foreigner… The others are not hell: they are our bliss on this earth.

La vita dell’uomo non è mai concepibile senza l’altro: tragedia allora non è il conflitto, l’alterità, la differenza bensì i due estremi che negano questo rapporto: la confusione e la separazione. In questa nuova stagione dobbiamo imparare ad accettare il mistero e l’enigma di chi non conosciamo, di chi appare come l’estraneo e non solo lo straniero. . . Gli altri non sono l’inferno: sono la nostra beatitudine su questa terra.
